Eve Hartling's paintings record specific impressions of her daily surroundings. They are observations of a place, a feature in a landscape, of how something looks at a time of day, a shadow cast, a slant of light. The impressions are of a transient nature that become captured through paint. In exploring this subject matter, the focus is on the painting—the challenge of representing something simplistically, directly and economically; ultimately to make an interesting picture. With these things in mind, she employs a style and method of paint application that both simplifies and simultaneously elevates the somewhat day to day subject matter.

Hartling's paintings are delicate, dreamy, oil paintings… the images do suggest something that exists just for a moment, and they give a wonderful feeling of space in unusual compositions that may place the dominant image of trees at the side of the canvas... her flowers also will drift off the canvas; sometimes she suggests ghostly presences with vague outlines of flowers or blue shadows for trees… |
